Making a Better World Through a Common Purpose

If you were to believe the ramblings of a certain dictator wannabe over in the U.S., you’d think that religion (or a certain faith/belief) is responsible for all the ills of the world.

Indeed, if you were to believe that person, you’d want to see these groups of people harassed, thrown out a country, stopped from entering a country, and overall being treated like third-class citizens.

Thankfully, most people take his ramblings as the ignorant, fear-filled gibberish that they are, and see the bigger picture at work.

Like the amazing inter-faith friendship over in Montreal, Canada.

The One?True Religion – Humanity

Thrown together (for want of a better description)?in close proximity at a mini-mall, the Al Jazira mosque sits next to the Chabad synagogue, which is situated next door to the Catholic Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys Church.

Instead of staying separated from each other, the three different faiths came together through conversation and genuine curiosity of how each other were doing each day.

That small step of saying hello to each other lead to them coming together to support a common purpose – a donation centre for newly-arrived Syrian refugees.

How they made that work is testament to how we can all make things work, despite (because of?) our “differences”.

The initiative was launched by the Muslim community of ?the mosque; the warehouse for the centre was arranged by the Jewish community (rent-free); and the centre itself was manned by the Catholic community.

Today, all three of the groups work together and provide/collect various toys, clothes, and other much-needed supplies.

One of the many positive things that have come from this amazing inter-faith project is the change in attitudes it’s empowering. As one volunteer said,

“Personally I had never been exposed to Arab culture. You hear negative things. This has changed my way of seeing the Muslim world. Spending time with them has opened me up to their culture. In the end, they?re not so different from us.” ~ source

Not so different, indeed. Something we all need to remember more often and help shift the conversation from hate and fear to love and acceptance.

Life Through a Dram Episode 4: We All Need Someone

This week my wife was rushed to the local ER after waking up at 4.00am with severe chest pains and breathing difficulties.

She had a bunch of tests – ECGs, scans, etc. – but nothing was really detected. The cardiologist thought it might be a heart murmur, but there’s no history of that so that was ignored.

Thankfully, she’s home now, but has to follow up to make sure everything’s okay.

When I posted an update on Facebook, the reaction from both physical friends and digital ones reminded me why the world is better when we have someone in it with us, as I share in this episode.

There Is Good in the World ? You Just Need to See It

Sometimes it?s tough either going online and looking at your social feeds, or watching the news on TV, or picking up a newspaper.

Wars. Hate. Bigotry. Violence. Divisiveness. Fear. Anger.

There?s a lot of negativity, and a lot of people stoking the flames of that negativity.

So rampant is it, you?d be forgiven for thinking there are no more good people in the world. Or, fewer than there was when you were younger.

But you?d be wrong.

There is good. There is love. There is caring. There is all this and more ? we just have to find it.

Then share it.

Then live it.

Do that, and we counter the hate and the fear with love and compassion.

That?s the world that?s truly out there. We just have to help it reach more eyes (click to expand images).

To the good people.

Life Through a Dram Episode 3: The Lives We Need to Change

This week saw yet another tragic and senseless school shooting in America. 10 people are dead, with more injured.

Once again, the usual soundbites are uttered by politicians, yet little weight actually lies behind them. If there was, we wouldn’t watch the same story play out again and again.

Today’s episode recants the words of a mother whose daughter was caught in the horror. It’s a much longer episode than usual, but that mother’s words, and those like her, deserve to be heard in their entirety.

Something needs to change. Apathy, and “thoughts can prayers”, are no longer enough. Truth be told, they never were…

Life Through a Dram Episode 2: When Being Late Can Be Good

Often in life, we’re told that being late is a bad thing. And, for most of the time, it’s probably true.

Being late for a job interview, for example, or an important meeting, can mean you lose the opportunity of a lifetime.

But what if being late can be as equally rewarding, and as life-changing? That’s the premise of today’s episode – I hope you enjoy, and don’t forget to subscribe via your preferred option.
