Bite-Size Morsels

Crispy Benne Seed Party Bites With Louisiana Honey MustardOne of the advantages of blogging is that you can make public service-type announcements without the nasal speaker voice. Of course, some folks have said I blog as if I speak with a nasal tone, so no change there! Anyhoo…

I just wanted to update you with a few little tidbits of information that you may (or may not) be interested in. So, feel free to class this post as useful, semi-useful, not really useful or useless – the choice, as always, is yours. So… off we go.

SxSW 2010 Panel Nomination

The South By South West festival (SxSW) in Austin, Texas, has undergone several changes over the years. Starting out as a music festival back in 1987, it added film and interactive elements to the line-up in 1994. The interactive aspect (SxSWi) has seen the annual event become one of the most influential for all things web, social media and more.

Next year could see yours truly speaking at SxSWi. Joined by Amy Sample Ward, Danielle Brigida, John Haydon, Rob Reed and Stacey Monk and hosted by Mark Lovett, we’ve suggested a panel to discuss the following question: Can Social Media Change Global Consciousness? While social media has been used for great individual causes, can it actually help effect a global and long-term change in mindset?

The suggestion has been accepted by the SxSWi planners and now it’s the voting period. This is where you can come in (if you wish).

Although you could say I’m biased, I think it could be a great panel with a very timely discussion. If you agree, and would like to find out more, you can pop over to the SxSWi Panel Picker page for our panel and offer it a thumbs up (although you do have to register to do so). Voting is open until September 4 – we’d love to see you there and your vote would mean a lot (if you like the idea).

Coming to a City Near You (Well, Maybe!)

Speaking of Stacey Monk and her Epic Change team, if you’re in Orlando, Florida on the weekend of September 5-6 (the day after SxSWi voting closes, ha!), maybe we can hang out for some beers on Saturday night?

I’ll be in Orlando to meet up with Stacey and Epic Change to discuss the 12for12k and Tweetsgiving collaboration this November. There are some very special plans taking shape to make this an amazing global event and that September weekend will see these plans start to take shape. So, if you’re in Orlando and want to hook up, leave a comment (or connect on Twitter if we aren’t already) – be great to chat and chill in the flesh, so to speak.

And that’s the end of the announcements – hope I didn’t bore you too much, and here’s to SxSWi and Orlando!

The 12for12k 12-Hour Twitter Tweet-a-Thon

This post is a little different from normal and is for the 12for12k Challenge, the charity project I founded for 2009.

It’s to tell you about the special 12for12k Tweet-a-Thon, which takes place on Twitter between 10.00am and 10.00pm Eastern on Thursday March 19 (today). This is the unique 12-hour Tweet event to raise money for this month’s charity, Share Our Strength, which combats child hunger in the US. The Tweet-a-Thon is Scott Stratten (@unmarketing) ‘s baby.

It’s very simple – $12 gets you entry into the draw for the prizes on this page.

Simply make your donation using the ChipIn widget either in the sidebar or at the bottom of this page. You’ll get a tax receipt from Share Our Strength as well as an automatic entry into the draw. We’ll do the rest for you.

All you need to do is follow the #12for12k hashtag on Twitter to keep up with what’s happening, as there will also be special flash giveaways every time we break a $1,000 threshold.

Now, in his own inimitable way, I’ll let Scott tell you all about it and his special offer for anyone donating $120. Thanks for your support, and let’s feed some hungry kids together.

Social Media for Good

As you may or may not know, I started a charity project this year called the 12for12k Challenge. At its simplest, it’s 12 charities throughout the 12 months of 2009, with the aim of raising $12,000 per charity. It’s a tall order, but one that can be achieved.

Yesterday, the 12for12k promo video was released. This is the result of a lot of hard work behind the scenes by Susan Murphy, Cheryl Gain and Kathryn Jennex of the 12for12k creative team. Post-production was very kindly carried out by Rob Lane and his great team at Overlay.tv.

I’d like to share the video with you now, and thank everyone for their continued support of the 12for12k Challenge. Together we can use social media for good and make the difference.

Clouding The Issue

How well do you keep your personal and business life separate? Are you able to separate the two relatively easy, or do they crossover too much to have significantly different views? Or to put it another way, if you had a personal issue with someone could you still work with them professionally?

I ask this as a situation arose today where I had to question whether I was in the wrong, someone else was, or was there even any wrong to start with. Okay, that sounded confusing – let me try again.

For anyone’s that’s been reading this blog or following me on Twitter for the last month or so, you’ll know that I founded a charity project for 2009, the 12for12k Challenge. While ambitious in its fund-raising aim, it’s also (to me) achievable, thanks to the way that myself and the partners that have joined me in the challenge are leveraging social media to raise funds.

Everyone involved in the project is giving their time for free – there’s no admin cost and any man (or woman) hours put in is on top of normal work and personal time. I don’t say this to make us sound like saints, although personally I’ll never be able to thank these people enough for the help they’re giving.

Rather, I say it to show that when it’s a good cause, people generally come out in force to help in whatever way they can. It’s called selflessness and it also goes to you kind people that are donating to each month’s chosen charity.

So today stunned me a little.

One of the hardest things with the 12for12k project (and, I’m sure, other non-profit causes) is raising awareness. Hitting people at the right time, driving traffic to the website for details, getting the word out – it’s not easy. Also, because of the economy and time of year, donations are a little slow at the minute. Which we always knew might happen – January is a tough month for countless charities.

To try and raise awareness, my partners and I are reaching out to our social media connections to ask if they’d help promote to their followers on Twitter. Or write a short blog post. Or record a video message for us, much like Jason Falls did. So far, everyone we spoke to has been brilliant – if they can’t do it right away, it’s definitely on the immediate future agenda.

Everyone apart from one.

Open and Shut Case.

One of the creative partners on the 12for12k team emailed a particular social media “power player” and asked if they’d be open to any of the above promotional suggestions. The response was, “No – I have an issue with someone on the team.”

Uh – run that by me again?

Now, unfortunately, I don’t know what the issue is or who it’s with since no further information was forthcoming, but I’m a little surprised and maybe just a tad disappointed.

This person prides themself on how open and helpful they are to other people, and helping others to attain the goals they set out to reach. Their blog has an excellent and loyal readership and their Twitter account is close to 20,000 followers.

So this is why I’m left scratching my head. I can’t see any issue this person would have with one of our team that they would put it above trying to change the lives of millions of people. I put the question out to Twitter, about personal issues clouding professional ones, and with few exceptions the answer was pretty unanimous – be professional, work around the issue and get the best results.

Of course, if it’s an ethical problem that this person has with either me or one of my partners, then I can understand their point of view. Ethics play a very large part in my personal and professional make-up, so I do understand.

Yet knowing the partners like I do, I just don’t see where an ethical issue could come into play. Which means it must be me, for some reason. Hopefully the person involved will respond to my email asking what the issue is and can it be resolved.

I know there will always be reasons for not liking someone, personally or professionally. I know there are times when you don’t want to work with someone. Yet for all these times, surely the greater good of a project should see you able to overcome personal feelings and get a professional job done.

Or is that asking too much? How about you – can issues be overcome or are the clouds too dense?

An Update on the 12for12k Challenge

12for12k-logo-final-v2Now that the 12for12k Challenge has officially launched, it?s beginning to catch the imagination of the media.

The challenge has already been featured in the Mississauga News in the Greater Toronto Area, and the press release is being picked up by various online media outlets.

On top of that, I will be interviewed on Toronto news station CityNews by CityNews reporter Kris Reyes. The interview will take place on the morning of Thursday 8th January, with probable airing time that same evening.

Today (Tuesday January 6) also sees me discuss 12for12k with Beth Harte at The Cause Is The Habit, an online discussion station, where people can learn more about the 12for12k Challenge and how to help the charities involved. You can take part in the discussion by joining in here from 7.00pm EST this evening and selecting the Causechat option from the navigation menu.

With the holiday season well and truly behind us, the big promotional push to raise awareness of the challenge begins in earnest. This is where you can help as well, by telling your friends, family and co-workers about it. If you need any promotional items or details how to donate, you?ll find all you need here.

Thanks for being with us so far – let?s push on and make the first charity WarChild a success.
