It’s Good to Say No

If you’re a business owner, do you have a social media presence yet? Set up your Twitter account, added a shiny new company blog and joined Facebook? How about a Squidoo page or a Ning community? Networking on LinkedIn? Got them all on your checklist? No?

GOOD.

Despite what you might hear, you don’t need a presence on every single social media network or community.

Contrary to popular belief, social media is not the be all and end all to your business worries. It’s not the one-fit-catches-all solution that will bring you endless streams of revenue and profit.

It is a powerful medium to spread your message and engage with your customers – but your customers need to be there first, old and new.

It is a hugely cost-effective medium when compared to traditional promotional and marketing spend, but you need to invest a lot of time to make it work. Time can be just as expensive a commodity as a media campaign.

Ask yourself who your core audience is. Are they the early adopters that would use social media much like boxers would use mouth pieces? Do they fall within the key users of the mediums you’re looking at? If not, why waste time in that arena? Why try and spread a message to people with closed ears? Even the most silver-tongued persuader will have a hard time if he can’t speak sign language.

By all means, open your business up to the strengths and opportunities that social media can offer. But open up the right doors – make sure your business is the key that fits.

Your business survives because your customers say yes. But sometimes it’s good to say no too. No?

But I’m Not a Shepherd

Apart from using the term “sheep”, which seems a little off (sheep follow blindly – people make their own choices), TwitterSheep is a pretty cool Twitter application that offers a visual cloud of someone’s followers. Simply type in a username and you’ll see a word cloud that’s generated by each follower’s profile.

There are obvious instant benefits to this – for example, what a new follower may talk about the most as well as what your own outreach is like.

Food (And Drink) For Thought

I read a recent blog post about a coffee shop increasing its clientele thanks to Twitter (and my own thanks to Rachel Reuben for pointing me in the right direction). It’s a great example of businesses engaging their local community through social media, and a great poster child for ROI in social media.

Yet as encouraging as this example is, there’s another way this business and others like it could increase its customer base and profits while reaching out to local social media users – teenagers.

While on Twitter this morning, I noticed a comment by Chris Clayton. He made a valid point that most Tweetups (public get-togethers of Twitter users) are in bars. Since Chris is only 17, he has to wait another year to take part – and there are many other countries where the legal drinking age is more than 18.

This is a huge audience that’s being missed, both by social media and business alike.

While there’s certainly no age barrier to social media, the majority of users are still within the 18-45 age group. A lot of businesses currently using Twitter effectively cater to this audience – technology and new media, for example, are hugely popular in this age group. But what about everyone else?

We talk about opening social media up to a wider audience, to make its tools and applications more approachable. One way of doing this to make it appealing to the non-core audience. This is where local businesses can really come in and claim a huge slice of the pie.

Take Chris’s example. He’s not old enough to drink at bars but he wants to get together with other local Twitter users of his age. I asked the Twitter community earlier about solutions, and the majority that came back were coffee shops, bagel shops and similar. And as the example of CoffeeGroundz shows at the start of this post, it works.

So here’s the pitch, local cafe and coffee/bagel shop owners.

  1. Get yourself on Twitter.
  2. Use the community to find out who the younger users neighbourhood are.
  3. Offer your place of business for the occasional Tweetup. If it’s a really good number, how about making it a private couple of hours?
  4. Start a Twitter group for your business and get the local teenagers to join it so you can post details of the latest Tweetup for everyone to see.

With one simple action, you’ve not only established a presence with your online and offline community, but you’ve also reached an audience that’s sorely underused. And you don’t even have to stop there – for adults that don’t particularly like bars, reach out to them too.

For the teenagers looking to find a place to meet other Twitter users in your city? Get some numbers together and take it to your local coffee shop. Show why it’d be worth it for them to let you arrange a Tweetup. Make sure you all buy at least a coffee or one item from the menu – after all, the business is helping you. Return the favour.

There’s a big chunk of business out there just waiting for someone. Ready to grab it?

Small Business Not Ready for Prime Time – Yet…

eyteachThis is a guest post from Elaine Young, who I have had some great conversations with recently about small business and social media. Elaine has some interesting views on why so many small businesses aren’t using social media, and I asked her if she’d share them with you.

2008 was the year that Twitter saw adoption grow at an astounding rate. Facebook surpassed 150 million active users and blogging become what seems to be a social norm. But does that mean small business is now ready for the social media revolution?

Facebook launched in 2004 and Twitter started in 2006. Blogs have really only started to grow from ?personal journals? to effective public relations tools in the past two years, and widgets and applications have only really been in strong play this past year.

So while 2008 may have seen a surge in growth in the ways in which the different social technologies can be accessed and connected, that doesn’t mean that small businesses are ready to jump in.

Why? Because they don?t know how to effectively use social media for their business.

I consider 2008 the year of “social media euphoria”. A group of early adopters started playing ? yes, playing – with the different tools that had become available. The power though, as we have discovered, is not just in the tools themselves but in two things:

  1. The ability to CONNECT the different tools to one another.
  2. The ability to CONNECT TO and COMMUNICATE? WITH the right people using the tools.

In this discovery process we are organically developing the best practices that small businesses can turn to. We have some interesting case studies.

For example many individuals are writing about how the Obama Campaign proved that social media was the reason for his overall success. While the campaign certainly leveraged the tools that were available, we need to be cautious in making broad statements about a campaign that used ALL media available and had the right message at the right time.

According to Twellow you can see that there are a total of 179,550 individuals in the US that have Twitter accounts.

When you zoom in on the visual you see that California has a lot going on and so does Texas. In Vermont there are 310 people with Twitter accounts. In our little Vermont microcosm, you can see that there are some businesses here, but most of them haven?t posted in weeks, let alone months.

There is an inherent need for small business to understand the ROI behind all of this. Even when human resources aren?t stretched tight, the small business has to be very strategic in how they approach their marketing. If the majority of their target market aren’t yet using these tools, what is the business case for them to jump in and take time to learn these tools? Particularly when they change at the speed of light (or so it seems).

So how do we move from early adopter frenzy to a small business-friendly, strategic adoption rate of social media?

We early adopters must work out the kinks and start formulating ?best practices?. We are already figuring out that ?selling? via Twitter is not the way to go ? but connecting is. Blogs help to build credibility and Facebook ? well we still are trying to figure that one out!

lijitWe must show how to measure the ROI of each tool. We have analytics for websites, we have stats for blogs and we have more companies such as Lijit working on measuring your social media ?reach?. Let?s try these out and see how they work.

We must educate. Singing to the choir feels really good, BUT it doesn?t help spread the word outside of our own circles of influence. That is the power of a tool like Twitter, coupled with Twellow ? we can now find people who are active with the tool who might influence and educate in different ways.

Don?t fall into the trap that ?only the young? use these tools. As a college professor who works with 18 ? 24 year olds every day, I find more often that they get involved with RSS and tools like Twitter not because they want to, but because I introduce them to the tools as an assignment.

Don?t lose sight of the basics. As experts we all must remember that the foundational best practices (such as target market analysis) should not be forgotten and are even more important during this time of innovation, connection and reshaping of the media landscape.

With this focus, we can make 2009 the year that began the legitimization of social media for strategic use in the small business world.
