Stop Searching for a Balanced Life

This is a guest post by Dinette Rivera, expanding on a comment she left on my recent thoughts about work-life balance. I asked her how she’d made changes in her life, and this post is the answer.

I don?t expect to live a balanced life. It is an unattainable goal. I chose a better goal – take control of my life.

All of it.

At one time, I was trying to juggle too many responsibilities. I obsessed about doing them well, and failing miserably. I was miserable!

It really felt like do or die. Find a way to be happy or become sick and depressed.

We are unhappy with our lives, not because we lack balance.

We are unhappy because we lack time to do what we want, when we want it.

When was the last you reflected on how you wanted to live, before you took a new job or started a business?

When was the last time you wrote down your values and made all major decisions around them?

I did just that.

I got clear on what I valued most. After love, I valued freedom and peace.

I decided how I wanted to live and began to redesign my life.

I changed my business model to more passive income streams. This gave me more freedom.

I became more productive by analyzing how I spend my time. Instead of many goals for the day, I write down one non-negotiable. Once complete, I write down the next non-negotiable.

This means I have more time for fun and family.

I keep a list of things I need to do, with no order. I refer to it when deciding on the non-negotiable.

Stop searching for balance and start living based on your values.

Instead, make certain the decisions you make are congruent with how you want to live.
